The Future of Educational Materials & the Role of the College Bookstore

Every academic semester, students obtain course materials for their courses. But the norm of a generation ago – going to traditional bookstores and buying books and perhaps selling them back at the end of the semester – has evolved.

Today, students may buy books online, use online materials or open education resources, or use an array of materials besides books. And they are likely mixing and matching – obtaining their materials in multiple ways. These shifts have changed the way students, instructors and college administrators think about educational materials and the role of bookstores.

Join Inside Higher Ed editors Scott Jaschik and Doug Lederman for a lively discussion on these topics Thursday, October 13 at 2:00 PM ET.

Not so Distant Learners: Creating a Sense of Presence in Online Courses/Programs

    Year: 2016

    Tuesday, October 25, 2016 @ 2:00 pm ET

Technology innovation and ubiquitous use has changed the landscape for online learning.  The role of the teacher automatically shifts in online environments – most obviously in the loss of traditional hierarchy reinforced by the teacher standing at the front of a classroom.   A loss of place – but an increased need to orchestrate and create ‘presence.’  What is the role of 'presence', a sense of learning together and belonging to a group?  This session will share practical examples of design activities in online courses and programs that help to create a sense of presence.
